The Best Cheap Mesh WiFi Systems of 2019

A mesh WiFi system is a way to extend wireless signal throughout an entire home.

These "whole-home WiFi systems" are made of a router and satellites. The satellites are similar to WiFi-extenders, but better, because they don't slow down wireless speeds.

Think of a traditional router as a stereo system: The further away you get from it, the weaker it sounds. Mesh WiFi systems work more like Sonos wireless speakers: You buy a speaker for each room, so no matter where you are, the sound is approximately the same.

A mesh WiFi system isn't for everyone. There are free ways to increase a wireless signal and a cheap WiFi extender may do the trick for a small home or apartment. But, if you're into competitive gaming, live in a large home or have dense walls, a mesh system may be worth it.

Mesh WiFi systems are expensive, costing as much as $500 for a base kit. Thankfully, a good system can be had for around half that price. Here are the best-reviewed mesh WiFi systems that have sold on Amazon for $250 or less in the past 12 months:

Good Price: $250 | Great Deal: $225

Google's mesh WiFi system is easy to set up and delivers fast and consistent wireless speeds across 3,000+ square foot homes, according to several Amazon customers. Some reviewers weren't able to connect older 2.4 GHz devices to their network or switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. A few customers were disappointed that this system isn't as configurable as a traditional WiFi router.

Sorry for the slim pickings, but the other mesh WiFi systems that I considered had tons of shadow complaints about firmware issues and customer service. I discount 4- and 5-star reviews that contain statements like "I spent days on the phone with customer support."
